Chapter Seventeen

She didn’t know how long they stayed in that quiet place between storm and reality. Andrew remained unconscious but still alive. She stayed beside him as long as they allowed her to. When they finally strapped him into a seat for the descent, she retook her own and fastened the safety straps with numb fingers.

Dan took them down, a wheeling smooth swoop that lasted far longer than her nerves thought it should. She kept her eyes fixed on Andrew, her tired mind not willing to risk even a moment of distraction. She didn’t know how much longer she had with him and she didn’t want to forget a single moment of it.

She didn’t feel the landing. The engines pitched down to a low growl and the others unstrapped. Suddenly, there were people with a gurney and Andrew was vanishing into the dark beyond the doorway. Elysia scrambled with her straps only to find her hands trapped. Confused, she looked up into Dan’s broad, freckled face.

“I’ll show you where you can wait.”

They weren’t going to try to send her away. The relief dizzied her. Dan finally unstrapped her himself and helped her to her feet. Beyond the doorway, the dark lay quiet and cool. Stars glittered at her, framing a large, glass fronted building and a single armored door. Dan led her inside, his hands gentle as he guided her through a maze of hallways and vacant offices.

“Rosalind’s going to want to know what’s happening with Slick, too,” he assured her as he held open another set of doors for her. “She’s been worried sick since we found out that he and Galloway were taken.”

“Rosalind?”

“My fiancée.” There was no mistaking the pride in his voice or the way his eyes softened. “She got to know him when he was sick not too long ago and I guess she got attached.”

He made Andrew sound like a stray puppy in need of a home. Before she could ask, he held open another door and motioned her inside.

A woman with long, wine red hair looked up, her expression expectant. “Did you find him?”

“Yep.” Dan ushered Elysia into the small waiting room and let the door swing closed. Behind him, a slim girl with spiky red hair and wary green eyes watched them. “He’s alive, but he’s not doing so good right now. The docs are with him and Athene’s gone to com Pan.”

Bending down, he kissed the woman long and slow. The girl in the corner made a face and turned away.

“Rosalind Bonet, this is Elysia Grant.” He made the introduction still leaning over the woman, his eyes locked on her face with a fierce tenderness that made Elysia smile. “The skinny little bit of nothing in the corner is Cleo Bonet,” he went on, oblivious to the dark looks he garnered from the slender girl.

The woman was nothing short of beautiful. Her features were cameo perfect framed by the rich red of her hair and her eyes gleaming a jewel bright aquamarine. And she looked at the big man as if he were the only man in the world.
